Slow City Perfection in Ljubljana
Ljubljana…What? Where? If you are anything like me, you may not know much about Ljubljana!!
Ljubljana is capital city of Slovenia, a small country in Central Europe, neighbouring Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria (countries we know a lot more about!).
It’s only a two hour flight from London and the perfect size for a weekend abroad. Small enough to explore in two days, yet interesting enough to lure you back for more! It is also beautiful!
Slow city perfection
Ljubljana’s old town is picture perfect. It has a castle on the hill, overlooking the city; a river meandering through the city centre. Pastel buildings, cobbled streets and flower baskets hanging from every door.
It’s a small city, where the old town is traffic free and this means you can leisurely walk to all the points of interests, without feeling rushed or panicked, about missing out.
It also has stunning restaurants, cafes and bars. Choose a coffee in the old town, a sunset wine by the river, and dinner in one of the many restaurants.
Add to this already heady mix: a beautiful big park; museums and beautiful old buildings; and a weekend of relaxation and exploration is guaranteed.
Ljubljana’s beautiful, old town, is dominated by the view of the castle and the river flowing through the city centre.
And then there is Jože Plečnik’s architecture, which commands the old town and adds to the charm, that is Ljubljana. The most striking of his designs are the Triple Bridge, Central Market, Trnovo Pier and Žale Cemetery.
Walk a little further and feast your eyes on the Baroque architecture of the Cathedral, the Town Hall and the Franciscan Church.
…and because the city is so small, you will most likely stumble upon these gems, without looking too hard.
We went at the height of summer as temperatures were hitting 30+ degrees. This meant we whittled down our list of restaurants, by wanting to sit outside. We were not disappointed, as Ljubljana makes the most of outside dining. Our favourite spots were:
Cafetino, in the old town, served the best coffee, we had in Slovenia. It serves fresh pastries in the morning, so get there early, before they sell out! Grab a table outside and watch the world go by! Highly recommended!
We booked AS Aperitivo in advance, as it got great reviews and we were intrigued by the terrace. It did not disappoint. We had the most amazing food, under trees, lined with fairy lights. The service was attentive, the wine flowing and we whiled the evening away, without ever feeling rushed.
We stumbled across Manna and loved the look of it. Set away from the centre of town on gorgeous street, it had all the hallmarks of a great neighbourhood restaurant. Dinner was served on the patio, set slightly back from the pavement. All the food was amazing, but the stand out dish of the night was, a deconstructed apple strudel. I still dream about this dessert!
If you are looking for something lighter, the nibbles and toasties at Todz are delicious. This cafe/bar is situated on the river bank and is beautifully designed with: exposed bricks, leather sofas and art from local artists.
If you still have energy after a days walking, dinner and drinks; Ljubljana has a great selection of quirky bars and clubs that stay open late into the night.
The most surreal and memorable drink was had at Kavarna SEM, which is situated in Slovenian Ethnographic Museum. Open till the early hours, we sipped cocktails, not shy from midnight, listening to the Rolling Stones, on deck chairs in the museum’s garden… A cultural highlight!
Sax Pub, is where we found ourselves time and time again. Great outside seating with beautiful jazz in the background. It is always busy without feeling rammed.
Central Hotel, is located in the heart of the Ljubljana. The rooms are tiny, but perfect for a weekend stay. Breakfast is included in the price and delicious!
